Insulin:
Understanding the role of insulin is crucial for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It’s a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels, ensuring your body gets the energy it needs. In women’s health, insulin plays a pivotal role in maintaining hormonal balance, influencing fertility, and supporting overall well-being.

However, when there’s an excess of insulin, it can lead to fat storage, particularly around the abdomen. This surplus of insulin also contributes to elevated lipid levels and increased blood pressure, posing risks to cardiovascular health. Balancing insulin is key to preventing these issues.

To manage insulin levels effectively, women can focus on a balanced diet with complex carbohydrates, fibre-rich foods, and regular exercise. Opting for meals that are focused on protein and with a lower glycemic load is recommended. Prioritizing stress management techniques like yoga or meditation can also positively impact insulin regulation. Remember, a balanced lifestyle is the key to harnessing the benefits of insulin for optimal women’s health!

Thyroid:
Exploring the intricate world of women’s health, our focus today is on the thyroid hormone—a vital player in the intricate symphony of the endocrine system. Nestled in the neck, this butterfly-shaped gland secretes hormones that wield significant influence over metabolism, energy levels, and overall well-being. The thyroid’s paramount importance to women’s health cannot be overstated, as it plays a pivotal role in regulating menstrual cycles, fertility, and pregnancy.

However, when the delicate balance of thyroid hormones is disrupted, it can lead to a cascade of negative impacts, affecting mood, weight, and energy levels. Conditions such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are common culprits, with symptoms ranging from fatigue and weight gain to anxiety and insomnia.

Fortunately, maintaining a harmonious thyroid function is within reach. Adopting a nutrient-rich diet, managing stress, and ensuring adequate iodine intake are key strategies. Regular check-ups and open communication with healthcare providers empower women to proactively address thyroid health, promoting overall wellness in this crucial aspect of women’s physiology.

Note that conventional thyroid function testing is based only on a TSH.  This number should be ideally between 1-2.  Other tests that I recommend are done are Free T3, Free T4, anti-thyroglobulin, anti-TPO, and RT3.  Your doctor will likely be unwilling to order these tests.  In this case you may need to pay for them privately or work with another practitioner.

IGF-1: You have probably heard of GH, aka Growth Hormone.  However, GH is not something that we can easily measure as it is secreted in pulses in the middle of the night, while one is asleep.  Enter the surrogate marker for GH, IGF-1.

Basically, GH / IGF-1 in kids is about growth, and in adults it’s about repair (read:  staying anabolic!)  Unfortunately, this hormone, like many other anabolic hormones, tends to dedline with age leading to many issues such as bone and muscle loss, hormonal imbalances, metabolic disturbances, and heart-related complications.  I recommend getting this one tested through annual bloodwork and ideally it should be over 200 mcg/L.

Incorporating a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients like protein, vitamins, and minerals can support healthy IGF-1 production. Regular exercise, especially weight-bearing and resistance training, and intermittent fasting can stimulate the release of growth hormone and subsequently IGF-1.  In cases of GH insufficiency, there are molecules that can be used to augment IGF-1 for anabolic and anti-aging effects.  These are known as growth hormone secretagogues and they are a more conservative approach than using GH in cases where it is required.
